Health Risks In Teenage Pregnancy

It is stress that drives a young adolescent into a relationship. Confirmation that she has conceived a child brings on added stress. She is too young to face this emotional challenge and unable to decide what to do regarding the pregnancy.Furthermore, a large number of negative effects follow a teenage pregnancy, a major one being social stigma. This has been proved by research studies galore.

The teenage girls are too young to face this challenge. It is difficult for them to decide that what they should do with their pregnancy. There are many other negative factors that follow teenage pregnancy. Here are some important negative effects of the teenage pregnancy.

First is Low Birth Weight.Because of the likelihood of teen mums not to gain the much-needed extra weight needed during the period of their pregnancy due to their eating habits, a low birth weight is most likely the result. A variety of childhood disorders can be associated with low birth weight.

Teenage mothers are far more likely to give birth to premature babies, which pose serious and sometimes fatal risks for the baby.Premature babies are at a much higher risk than full term babies to develop bleeding in the brain, serious retinal problems, intestinal problems, and even sudden infant death syndrome, which is the unexpected and unexplainable death of a baby in their sleep.

Often the teen age moms-to-be are not responsible enough to take care of their health and their babies health as well. Random eating habits and mal nutrition due to increased rate of smoking, excessive alcohol intake, or taking drugs during pregnancy may put both the mother and infant in a great danger.

Given that an adolescent may not have fully developed her physical structure, problems in delivering the child may arise as caused by an underdeveloped pelvis.

Other complications that teenage mother might encounter are blood disorder such as leukemia and blood pressure that rises to an abnormally high level which could result to maternal death.

Not only the increased health risks in teenage pregnancy but the added pressure from the society comes as a serious shock for the teenage mothers. It is usually hard to get a social acceptance for such babies. It may hamper the psychological balance of a teenage mom, resulting in suicide in extreme case.

Teenagers are in a developmental transition, and pregnancy or marriage usually adds emotional stress. Pregnant girls and their partners tend to drop out of school or vocational training, thus increasing their economic problems, loss of self-esteem, and strain on interpersonal relationships.

Even if the teen plans to continue her education, it becomes difficult for her to meet the targets. She has to repeat classes and her scores are poor.

When grown up, the young ones of these ‘teen mothers’ exhibit behavioral tendencies which are deemed socially unacceptable. This is in fact the worst effects of a teenage pregnancy. The son can become a criminal offender and land up in prison. The daughter may follow in the footsteps of her mother and become a victim of teenage pregnancy herself.

Contraception education is imperative and should include family counseling, psychosocial planning, and contraception usage explanations for both boys and girls.

Teach your child to prevent pregnancy and gift him or her for birthday a contraception guide book! It might be much more useful thing, than any other gift in their life.
