Injectable Contraceptives
Commonly known as ‘Shot’ or ‘Depo’, injectable contraceptives are a progestin-only injection that women receive in the arm, thigh or buttocks, every three-month. This is a very effective method that works by stopping the ovaries from releasing eggs. As per reports, with proper and typical use within the very first year, less than one woman in hundred will become pregnant. In case, immediate contraceptive is desired, it must be administered within five days of the menstrual cycle. Since this method requires a woman to take the injection every three months, it is very convenient as well. It carries a number of benefits. For example, it offers privacy, and no specific action is required before, during or after sex. It may also help reduce or eliminate menstrual cramping. However, it may also have side effects on some women, such as it may cause slight weight gain, headache, etc.
Combined Oral Contraceptive Pills
Commonly known as the pill”, this method involves daily intake of either a combined hormonal (usually synthetic progestin and estrogen) or progestin-only pill. It works by preventing evolution, increasing cervical mucus to block sperm, and creating a thin uterine environment. Some of its benefits include lighter monthly periods with reduced cramps, protection against cancer of the ovaries and uterus, etc. However, there are certain things that must be kept in mind while taking these pills. Make sure, it is being taken at the same time each day.
Emergency Contraceptive Pills
Commonly known as morning after” pills, emergency contraceptive pills are used to pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. For this, these pills must be taken within 120 hours after such intercourse. It works effectively by preventing fertilization or implantation of a fertilized egg and reduces the chances of pregnancy by 75 to 88 percent. The obvious benefit of these pills is that it provides last minute option for preventing pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. However, it is not recommended to take these pills as a regular form of contraception. As the name suggests, it must be taken in emergency situations only, such as a condom breaks or pills are forgotten. Also, the sooner you take the same, the better are the chances of preventing pregnancy.
Contraceptive Implant
Contraceptive implant consists of six, small capsules that are inserted into the skin of a woman’s upper arm. After being inserted, the capsules release the hormone progestin, and this eventually prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs. It is a quite effective method and it starts working within 24 hours of insertion. What is more, it can provide protection for up to five years. But, at the same time, there are some hard facts as well. Reports say some women may experience complications with rod removal.
