Hormonal contraception- An effective way for birth control
Around four million women in UK use hormonal contraception for preventing pregnancy, because even condoms fail at times. The most popular hormonal contraception method is contraceptive pills. Contraceptive pills are the most reliable and convenient way to control pregnancy. These birth control pills not only control your fertility, but also prove to be beneficial in case of heavy and painful periods, endometriosis and sometimes even in improving the appearance of skin. Though, it may be noted that contraceptive pills doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted diseases, but still they give 100% assurance in protecting you from unplanned pregnancy. A woman’s menstrual cycle is controlled by two hormones: oestrogen and progestogen. The synthetic hormones present in the pill trick your body into believing that ovulation has occurred and interferes with your normal menstrual cycle to avert pregnancy. The oral contraceptive pills are either combined with both the female sex hormones-oestrogen and progesterone, or have just one progestogen hormone. The single hormone pills are beneficial for those women who can’t tolerate the effect of the hormone oestrogen.
Common Contraceptive pills:
There is a wide variety of hormonal contraception available nowadays. You can pick any of the pills which will suit your lifestyle and needs. However, it is recommended to consult a doctor before taking any contraceptive pills. The most popular combined contraceptive pills are Yasmin, Marvelon and Dianette. Availability of different pills gives you a chance to select from all the existing options.
Yasmin is highly popular among women across the world. Yasmine is composed of artificial oestrogen and progestogen, specifically known as ethinylestradiol and drospirenone. The release of an egg in the womb is known as ovulation, but these synthetic hormones together prevent ovulation so that pregnancy doesn’t occur. Moreover, it also thickens the cervical mucus which makes it impossible for sperm to enter the womb. The womb lining is also altered so that an egg can’t attach itself. This oral contraceptive is the best option for women who fear weight gain due to intake of such hormonal contraception. Yasmin pill doesn’t cause any kind of weight gain. You need to take this pill 21 days of your menstrual cycle and have to start taking from the first day of your period.
Marvelon is a low dose contraceptive pill which has proved very efficient in controlling pregnancy. It reduces period pain, making periods regular and also improves the appearance of skin. This pill also works in three ways, same as Yasmin. Firstly it prevents ovulation, thickens the cervical mucus and finally the womb lining is thinned. All these factors prevent pregnancy very effectively and conveniently. If you are pregnant, or have heart, liver and kidney problems then it’s better to avoid contraceptive pills.
Dianette is another combined contraceptive pill, which works as effectively as other oral contraceptives. It has proved helpful in acute cases of hirsutism (problem of excessive body hair). It is a monophasic pill which means with the intake of this pill, the hormone level remains throughout the month. You need to take this medicine for 21 days of your cycle, after which there is a seven days break when you don’t have to take any more tablet.
