This tactic is dangerous to their health and unnecessary. It is unnecessary because there are so many alternatives to try to help reduce stress that are not damaging to the health.
Often times smokers admit that they started smoking regularly in order to reduce daily stress in their lives and that they cannot quit smoking now because they fear they will become stressed out and have no relief from the stress. This is their belief, and, if they believe it to be true, then the stress will probably occur.
If a smoker can understand the concept of ‘mind of matter’ then they have a better chance of succeeding. If they can convince themselves that they don’t really ‘need’ a cigarette, they won’t smoke one. If they believe they can quit smoking and not be stressed out, then they can. The more you can focus on non-stressful things the more you won’t want to smoke.

Such techniques are deep breathing exercising, meditation, or just simply zoning out for a while. For some it may be hard to get used to meditation, not all have an open mind to do this. If you will allow yourself to clear your mind, you will be able to relax. The more relaxed you are, the less likely you will want a smoke. Doing these things will put your mind and inner self at ease. Being at ease and being calm will help you to better deal with life’s challenges such as quitting smoking.
